In the picture, Kaufmann gives a fresh impression of a lake in the foothills of the Alps. The low horizon puts the viewer directly in the scenery. The light is bright, but diffusely distributed through the clouds except for highlights on the water next to the boat and on the horizon of the water level. The cows on the shore, the sailing boats, and the steamboat in the distance on the lake enliven the landscape.
