Willem van Herp is known for group portraits in interiors. A family with a total of ten children proudly presents itself here. In the center of the painting is the mother in a white dress who was probably given a family portrait, perhaps for her birthday. Her husband holds a jeweled necklace as a gift for her. His clothes suggest that he belongs to a rich circle of merchants. Children are festively dressed and busy with toys such as weapons or armor for boys and feather fans for girls.
