The first edition of the Vulgate Bible with illustrations by Gustave Doré was published in 1866 by Maison Mame de Tours, a major French publishing house. This project brought together the best engravers of the time. Meeting with extraordinary success, it was printed in numerous editions in Europe and beyond in the following decades.
