The city of Caesarea was originally called Mazaca and was known already in the time of the Hittites. It lay at the foot of Mount Argaios (Argaeus) and was the capital of the kingdom of Cappadocia. At the end of the 1st century BC, in honor of the Emperor Augustus, it changed its name to Cesarea and it is known under this name to this day (Kayseri).
